Create. Connect. Unwind.

Playful communal painting workshops and creativity sessions in Launceston and surrounds, Tasmania.

Come to play. Leave with a little magic.

Paint & Play with Ella May is a relaxed collaborative, communal painting experience where creativity is shared. Paint & Play was inspired by Hannah Taylor-Matthews, founder of A Creative Pause.

Instead of everyone sitting down to copy the same painting, the group gathers around one large shared canvas and creates something together.

One person adds a colour.

Someone else follows with a shape.

A conversation starts.

Someone laughs.

Someone who was convinced they were “not artistic” picks up a brush anyway.

Slowly, the canvas becomes a reflection of everyone who helped create it.

And often, so does the experience.

Paint & Play is about creativity, but it is also about connection, belonging, relaxation, play, conversation and the simple pleasure of doing something a little different.

You do not need to know how to paint.

You do not need to think of yourself as creative.

You do not need to arrive feeling confident.

There is no right or wrong way to paint here. No perfect outcome to achieve.

Just colour, curiosity, connection and room to play.

🎨 Create

Pick up a brush, explore colour and add your own marks, ideas and personality to something being made together.

✨ Connect

Share a canvas, some time and space to create. Chat, laugh or simply enjoy making something together.

🌼 Unwind

Slow down, switch off from everything else for a while and enjoy creating without needing to be “good” at it.

People participating in a group painting activity around a table covered with colorful artwork, inside a room decorated with heart and bunting decorations, with large windows showing green outdoor scenery.

Coming by yourself? Perfect.

Sometimes the hardest part of trying something new is not knowing who to go with.

Maybe your friends are busy. Maybe you are new to the area. Maybe you would love to meet people, but walking into a room full of strangers feels a little daunting.

You are absolutely welcome to come alone.

Paint & Play workshops are intentionally kept small, with space to settle in, talk, create and connect naturally.

You might arrive not knowing anyone.

You pick up a brush.

Someone beside you adds something to the canvas.

You start talking.

You laugh.

And somewhere along the way, a room of strangers starts to feel a little less strange.

Come on your own. You will be welcomed just as you are.

People painting flowers and faces on a large canvas with various paints and brushes.

Not artistic? Even better.

Maybe you have not touched a paintbrush since school.

Maybe someone once made you believe you were “bad at art.”

Maybe the idea of painting sounds lovely until you start worrying that everyone else will know what they are doing.

There is no expectation here.

No masterpiece to produce. No painting to copy. No right or wrong way to do it.

Experiment. Change your mind. Paint over something. Make a mark simply because you love the colour.

All levels of artistic ability, including absolutely none, are welcome.

No judgement. No pressure. Just an opportunity to play.

How does Paint & Play work?

Everything is taken care of, so you can simply arrive and settle into the experience.

01

Choose a workshop

Find a Paint & Play session that feels right for you and book your place.

Workshops are intentionally kept small, creating more space for personal attention, authentic conversation and a relaxed atmosphere.

02

Come as you are

Come alone, bring a friend or arrive with absolutely no idea what you are going to paint.

Everything you need will be waiting for you.

03

Create together

Gather around one shared canvas and begin adding your own colours, ideas and marks.

There is no plan you have to follow.

The artwork grows as the group does.

Paint & Play in action

Colour, conversation, creativity and connection, all around one very big canvas.

Sometimes it is quiet concentration.

Sometimes it is laughter.

Sometimes it is someone saying, “I have no idea what I’m doing,” before happily adding another colour anyway.

Sometimes it is two people who did not know each other an hour ago chatting like old friends.

And slowly, piece by piece, something shared begins to emerge.

Upcoming Workshops

Create together. Meet people. Unwind.

Paint & Play workshops are small, relaxed communal painting experiences held in Launceston and surrounds, Tasmania.

They are designed to feel welcoming rather than intimidating, with space to talk, create, breathe and connect.

Come with someone you know.

Come because you want to meet people.

Come because life has been busy.

Come because you want to do something different.

Come even if painting makes you nervous.

No experience needed.

Small groups. Space to connect.

Meet Ella

The colourful human behind Paint & Play.

I’m Ella, an art therapist, coach and counsellor with more than 20 years of experience working in the mental health space.

Over the years, I have seen how powerful creativity can be when people are given the space to slow down, reconnect and feel safe enough to simply have a go.

That is a big part of why I created Paint & Play.

I love colour. I love creativity. But mostly, I love what can happen when people gather around a table, let their guard down a little and make something together.

My professional experience shapes the way I hold each session too.

I want people to feel welcomed, supported and comfortable, whether they arrive bursting with creative ideas or quietly wondering what on earth they have signed themselves up for.

There is no judgement here and no pressure to perform.

Just encouragement, curiosity and room to reconnect, create and experience a little magic of your own.

1:1 Creativity Sessions

A little more space to create at your own pace.

Sometimes creativity feels easier with a little more space and a little less noise.

My relaxed 60-minute one-to-one creativity sessions are for anyone wanting to reconnect with their creative side, explore an idea or simply spend some time making with gentle support and encouragement beside them.

You might already love creating.

You might not have touched a paintbrush in years.

You might feel curious but nervous.

You might simply want an hour where there is nothing you have to achieve.

These sessions are guided by you.

There is no pressure to create something impressive and no expectation to know what you are doing.

Just time to explore, play and experience what unfolds.

Kind Words

A few lovely words from people who came along, picked up a brush and gave themselves permission to play.

  • “This is one of the best creative workshops I've ever been to. Ella is so welcoming and genuinely cares - about every single person she's helping, and about the art of play.

I felt so alive! These are so much more than art workshops.. they are cathartic, healing, nurturing, liberating.

Ella and her workshops are the perfect antidote for these busy lives we lead. They helped me to reconnect to myself, to my spirit, to my joy, to other women. I feel so rejuvenated and inspired, and cannot wait for the next one!!

Ella, you truly have a gift. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️”
